Sony Cybershot DSC W210 Review

The Sony Cybershot DSC W210 packs plenty of power with its 12 megapixel sensor. This camera is small enough to fit into most pockets. It is available in silver, dark grey, pink and green. The Cybershot DSC W210 has a 4x optical zoom lens.

For most purposes you are likely to find the 12 megapixels overkill. Even if you are looking to make large prints you should find 6 to 8 megapixels plenty unless you are looking to go up to poster size and beyond. If you were planning to do that then the likelihood is you would be looking to invest in a more expensive and better quality camera anyhow.

To me the big advantage of having so many megapixels is that Sony has included a feature called smart zoom. This allows you to increase the amount of zoom available as long as you are prepared to sacrifice some of the megapixels you shoot at. In the past I have even found that shooting at lower megapixels can increase the quality of the images you shoot. Other advantages include taking up less space on a memory card and faster times to upload your photos to a computer. If you activate smart zoom you can increase zoom up to 25x. This may be overkill as at that setting you can only capture pictures for playback on a computer or television screen, but there are plenty of steps in the middle where you can find the right balance between print size and zoom.

The Cybershot DSC W210 fits into a group of pocket cameras that are less expensive than the top of the range models. The main reasons behind the savings tend to be the design of the cameras and the build quality. If you do not mind a fairly plain looking digital camera then you can save yourself plenty of money.

In terms of features there is not that much to choose between this camera and some of the more expensive ones. The 2.7 inch LCD screen compares well enough and the only obvious feature I can think of that is missing here is mechanical image stabilisation. This is where image stabilisation is handled either by gyroscopes in the lens or by making tiny shifts to the position of the sensor.

Aside from this Sony has incorporated some of the latest buzz features. These include face detection for sharper portraits and a smile shutter that automatically fires off a shot when the Cybershot DSC W210 detects someone is smiling. I have never noticed face detection making that much difference to a portrait shot and only you can decide how much value a smile shutter adds to the camera for you. Something you do not often see on a camera this size is the ability to add conversion lenses. This can improve the telephoto or wide angle capabilities of the camera. In order to do this you also need to buy a lens adapter.

The camera is able to produce High Definition still images, but it can only output standard definition movies.

On the whole I found the camera easy to use. Sony lays out its menus in a sensible way. They are icon rather than text based, but text does show up as you scroll through the icons.

When it comes to picture quality the Cybershot DSC W210 does a solid job. I cannot claim the pictures it produces are anything out of the ordinary, but on the whole the camera does a decent all round job if you are looking for a general snapshot camera with a reasonable price tag.

Similar cameras you may wish to take a look at include the Panasonic Lumix FS6, Panasonic Lumix FS7, Panasonic Lumix FS15 and the Olympus FE-5000.

Taking Better Digital Photos in 2007

I've decided as a new year's resolution to start taking better pictures. Having gone through three digital cameras (one was stolen) I am down to two I use on a regular basis. A Canon SD300 and a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX5. Rather than spend money this year on buying another camera I've decided to do the best with what I've got and learn to take better photos instead.

Doing some after new year's shopping online, I came across an ad for an ebook offering digital photo secrets.

I'm usually pretty apprehensive about buying ebooks online. You never get to see much inside the book and there is no book flipping before purchase.

But it was midnight the day after new years and I wanted info now! Where was I going to go? I took a chance and am glad I did.

The purchase went through petty painlessly. I paid with Paypal and downloaded the books (there are actually several bonuses with the order).

I found the book easy to read and the tips were concise and well presented. There is usually a before and after photo demonstrating the result which I found very useful. Nothing like seeing the tip in action to really "get" it. I will give a brief review of the book in sequential order.

The book is broken up into 14 chapters and gets right to the point on how to improve your digital photos. There is very little on the history of photography, how to interpret famous photos or things of that nature. There's nothing wrong with those topics and I took evening courses covering them myself but this book is primarily about helping you take better pictures immediately.

The 14 chapters are:

* Introduction

* Top 21 Tips To Using a Digital Camera

* Digital versus Film Cameras

* Better Looking Pictures

* Composition

* Special Occasions

* Zoom

* Using Manual Modes

* Image File Formats

* Coverting from Film to Digital

* Which Digital Camera Should I Buy?

* Caring for your Camera

* Printing Your Images

* Miscellaneous Questions and Answers

The Top 21 tips gets you taking great pictures right away. Solving the most common photography problems. There are plenty of useful nuggets I will try to incorporate into my future photography, but the biggest tip of all is the last one, try to incorporate ALL the other tips every time you shoot and you should get some amazing results.

Digital photo secrets covers some of the other major problems hobbyists like me have. That is white balance, is with white balance, use of filters, focusing and metering. All that is explained better than whatever tiny manual that comes with most cameras.

The digital photo secrets book covers film cameras in the "Digital versus Film" section and while I was expecting the author to bash film cameras, he actually gives a very balanced view and covers the pros and cons of each. That's a pleasant surprise because I still occasionally like to take a few shots with an old Pentax purchased in a garage sale a few years back just for the thrill of getting them back from the drug store.

I have purchased printed books that were not as useful and that's even after I had a chance to flip through them. I don't regret finding the digital secrets book site for one instance. It is well worth the money and the bonuses are just as valuable.

Digital Camera Basics

An electronics on-line discussion forum contains a story about an elderly woman who wanted a simple camera to take pictures of her grandchildren. When she received a digital camera for Christmas, she looked puzzled for a moment and then asked, "Where do you put in the film?" This humorous example demonstrates how the revolutionary technology of digital cameras may be mystifying for those who have difficulty grasping the concept of a "filmless" camera! For almost a century, photography enthusiasts sagely discussed such topics as 35mm film, light meters and F-stops; today, digital cameras have made such topics all but obsolete.

Howstuffworks.com contains an article by Gurevich, Karim, and Wilson that greatly simplifies an explanation of how digital cameras work. Very simply, they explain that CDs, mp3's, and DVDs all share the same technology: they convert traditional analog "wave" data into digital data based upon "bits." In so doing, this radical shift in technology has changed greatly - and forever - how we do things and what has become possible including digital "filmless" cameras. While film cameras depend upon chemical and mechanical processes, digital cameras contain a computer that records images electronically.

In 1994, Kodak and Apple developed and sold the first digital cameras. Today there are hundreds of models to choose from, depending upon the type of pictures you need, the complexity with which you're comfortable, and what digital camera you can afford. For everyday use, most people prefer a "point and shoot" camera that isn't complex, takes good quality pictures that can be loaded onto computers or printed for personal use and to send to friends, and is affordable. According to a number of consumer guides and customer reviews, the top ten digital cameras in the low, mid, and high price ranges are:

1. Nikon D300 (high)

2. Canon EOS 5D (high)

3. Canon EOS 40D (high)

4. HP Photosmart M547 (low, great value)

5. FujiFilm Finepix S700 (mid)

6. GE A730 (mid)

7. Nikon D200 (high)

8. Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xsi (high)

9. Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 (mid)

10. Canon EOS 30D (high)

The point should be made that what constitutes a "great" digital camera is usually in the eye of the beholder. One person's "top ten" list is almost certain to differ from another person's. For example, a digital camera that is making devoted converts is the Casio Exilim series that sells in the mid-level price range, depending upon your digital camera photography needs. On the other end, Digital Camera.com rates the Pentax Optio E-10 as "the worst digital camera ever."

With all these differing opinions, what's the best way to buy the digital camera that's right for you? If you simply want to take personal pictures, choose a digital camera that has at least three megapixels. This will give you good quality pictures at a very affordable price. Remember that the higher the number of megapixels, the better quality your pictures will be, but the digital camera you choose will be more complex and more expensive. Also consider the size and shape of the camera; is it easy for you to carry in your purse or pocket? Finally, be sure your digital camera has at least 256-512 megabites of space on its memory card so you won't have to buy additional memory cards. Taking all these factors into consideration will help you enjoy capturing treasured memories for years to come.

How to Recover Lost Pictures From Panasonic Lumix GF1 Camera Memory Cards

Memory card corruption is a common problem encountered by most of the users using digital cameras, mobile phones, or camcorders. Corruption can occur at any point, rendering to inaccessibility of all images, audios, videos, and other digital media files saved in the card. Few common card corruption reasons are improper handling of the digital camera, interrupted read or write operation, and malicious software like virus. While an updated backup allows the user to restore all his digital files, its absence can result in loss of beautiful memories. However, there is no reason to worry as the files can still be recouped using an effective third-party Camera recovery software.

To elaborate the memory card corruption, consider, you have a Panasonic Lumix GF1 camera with SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) card to store your images. The card worked fine till your camera switched off while you were clicking some pictures (battery empty). Now, when you try to view previously saved images, you get the below error message:

"MEMORY CARD ERROR"

After this error message, all the images saved in the SDHC card became inaccessible. As the camera was unable to surmount the above error message, you could not even capture any new pictures.

Cause:

The above error message appears only when SDHC card was corrupted.

Resolution:

To overcome SDHC memory card corruption, you need to:

Restore all inaccessible images from valid and up-to-date backup. In most cases, the backup is saved on some other storage media.

In case of backup unavailability, you will need to format the memory card in the camera. While formatting enables you to save new images, it also deletes previously saved images in SDHC card. To recoup lost images after formatting, a commercial Camera recovery tool needs to be used. Such Picture recovery software can be used by any user, irrespective of his technical understanding. This is because the recovery software are designed to be user-friendly

Digital camera recovery is an effective and risk-free software that recovers lost pictures after formatting your digital camera and other devices. Compatible with SD, SDHC, xD, CF, and other memory cards, the recovery tool recovers image file types like JPEG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, etc. With different versions designed for Windows and Mac OS X, the software allows you to save recovered photos at specified destination.
